Querrey triumphs in Los Angeles

Sam Querrey ended a string of final round frustrations by beating Australia’s Carsten Ball 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to claim the Los Angeles Open title here on Sunday.
Querrey was playing in his third straight final — and fourth of the season — but hadn’t won a tournament.
“I didn’t want to lose three finals in a row,” said the 21-year-old. “I was a little worried after that second set, I was really mad at myself, but I came back strongly in the third.”
Querrey had lost in the final in New Zealand to Juan Martin del Potro in January, and the last two weeks he came up short in the championship match at Newport and Indianapolis. .
At Stanford, France’s Marion Bartoli upset American Venus Williams 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to win the Stanford Classic on Sunday.
World No. 14 Bartoli dominated the rallies, served and returned with aggression.
The eighth-seeded Bartoli served for the match at 5-4 in the second set, but played passively and was broken. The latter went on to win the set when Bartoli double-faulted.
However, the Frenchwoman did not lose her cool. She fell behind 0-30 in the final game, but nailed four straight winners, including a big serve, to finish the contest.
World No. 9 Nikolay Davydenko won his second title in as many weeks when he eased past Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-0 in the Umag clay court final on Sunday.
The Russian also won on clay in Hamburg last week and his victory in Croatia was his 16th career title.
At Washington, Ernests Gulbis of Latvia beat American Kevin Kim 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the second round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic on Sunday.
Wayne Odesnik of the United States defeated Chile’s Paul Capdeville 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the opening match of the main draw.
Andy Roddick is the top-seeded player in the tournament.
