Gazmend Freitag – a small exhibit in Vienna

A chance for art collectors! With November 2nd 2017 the work of the Albanian born painter Gazmend Freitag is on view in the exclusive Viennese gallery “ Der Kunstraum in den Ringstrassen Galerien” owned and run by Hubert Thurnhofer. Three of his larger sized oil paintings are available:  “Nude standing ” and “The Black Hat” which date from 2012, and “The Eagle” painted in 2015. They represent on the one hand the sensual and erotic elements which play an important role in the oeuvre of this versatile artist. On the other hand they show his love for mythology and symbolism, since the eagle as a heraldic animal plays an important role in the history of  the Albanian people.

In mythology, the eagle is linked with the sun. Its power, strength and radiance moreover make it the world’s most important emblem, after the lion. Majestic, proud and mighty it circles in the sky. The eagle not only rules the air, but is also a totem animal.. This symbolism is expressed in the work of Gazmend Freitag.

The black hat

This unique portrait of wanton playfulness ignites the imagination with rich colours and textures. The black hat obscures the face of the woman, and yet she does not seem to be a stranger but rather someone we know and like. Against the saturated golden background her skin appears to be lit as if from within. The blackness of the hat and the velvety red of the cloth around her waist imply something mysterious and promising which is being held in check by her will. A game of erotic Hide and Seek painted in a style reminiscent of Post-Impressionism.
